WHY 90 MEETINGS IN 90 DAYS? THE BENEFITS

“Once I was clear-headed, and I hadn’t been clear-headed in so long, I was like, I can never go back. And I’m still thankful.”

Travis Barker

Why 90 in 90? The Benefits

Any old-timer will tell you that attending 90 meetings (or more) in 90 days will significantly increase your chances of remaining abstinent from your addiction for the long run. But MORE IMPORTANTLY, the emotional and mental fog that all alcoholics and addicts have (whether or not we know or admit it) will lift faster, bringing you into a place of peace of mind and a joy for life much quicker. In other words, your quality of life increases further and further with each successive meeting and connection with peers who know your struggle.

Love Thy Self

One of the most powerful ways to come into a place of self-acceptance and therefore self-love is to take good care of yourself. People who change their diet or add an exercise routine often report feeling better about themselves. They gain an increased sense of personal value. They soon realize that no one on the planet could make them feel this, it had to come from them. 90 meetings in 90 days provides an amazing opportunity to take good care of yourself, allowing you access to this increased sense of worthiness.

The Friendship Dilemma

Alcoholics and other addicts have plenty of “friends”, making it more difficult to walk away from them, thus their addiction. "These are my friends!" "They get me!" But do they really? If you are seeking to “clean up your act” and get sober, then it becomes essential to get yourself around as many like-minded people as possible and begin to build relationships with them. 90 meetings in 90 days accomplishes this for you. Not only that, but these people have real potential to become true friends for the long haul. You have the opportunity, should you take advantage of it, to build much healthier relationships that are far easier to be in than the unhealthy ones that we all have come to know. Which brings me to my next point.

Better Social Skills

Most alcoholics and other addicts lose the ability to communicate effectively (especially in groups), properly express and process their feelings, interact appropriately with others (especially close personal relationships), stay sober, and even showing up on time. 90 meetings in 90 days will help alcoholics and other addicts begin to regain (or gain for the first time) these essential social abilities. And in case you are not aware, life is MUCH easier with these essential social skills!

A Pocket Full of CASH!

Calculate how much money you save each day by remaining sober. Maybe even make plans for what you are going to spend that money on instead for various increments of time. What will you do with that money after 7 days of abstinence? Can the savings over the period of 30 days afford you a brand-new television? Will 90 days accumulate enough funds for a little vaca or road trip? If 90 meetings in 90 days will help keep you from drinking or using, then 90 in 90 actually has monetary value!

Other Notable Benefits

For those who also have addiction recovery counseling in their recovery toolbox, which I am a huge advocate for, committing to 90 meetings in 90 days makes perfect sense. Counseling appointments are usually made on a weekly basis. Here is where you can find the support you need in between those counseling appointments. And sometimes, it feels like eternity in between those damned appointments!

Although it sounds like a lack of understanding when we hear that we need to learn better coping strategies to abstain and become sober, learning how to better cope with stress actually increases life quality. I didn’t realize that I had a problem dealing with stress until I learned to cope better. The transformation was so subtle that I don’t even know how it happened. I just can’t explain the difference except that I don’t feel shitty when under stress nor does it keep me from eating or sleeping right. So, yes. I will include that 90 meetings in 90 days can help you to better deal with stressors and probably get there quicker!

The best part of the 90 in 90 challenge is that, should you relapse or otherwise come off track, you can always begin again, no negative consequences, necessarily. In other words, there will be no penalty to pay, no judgement from other members, no admonishment from the group, no retribution, or condemnation other than it will take you a little longer to succeed. NOT that you utterly failed. This makes it easier to get back on the horse again and succeed the next time!

While you might receive a 90-day coin as a continuing reminder of your amazing accomplishment, the real reward is the pride and sense of worthiness you feel when you reach this massive milestone! Doing 90 meetings in 90 days will be a big help in getting you there.
